Aim: Extra-role behaviors in academic departments, which go beyond formal duties, significantly enhance the quality and performance of higher education institutions. These behaviors positively impact motivation, working relationships, and educational outcomes. This study evaluates the quality of extra-role behaviors in academic departments at the University of Isfahan.
Methodology: This applied research employed a mixed-method, sequential exploratory approach (qualitative-quantitative). First, text mining was used to gather comprehensive data, followed by interviews with 15 key experts selected through purposive sampling to identify components of extra-role behaviors. In the quantitative phase, 140 managers and faculty members from three fields responded to a questionnaire. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, and quantitative data were processed using SPSS27.
Results: The overall status of extra-role behaviors in the academic departments at the University of Isfahan is average. Components such as "friendly and effective communication with students and graduates" and "strengthening intergroup communication" are at an average level. However, "improving the quality of research projects," "enhancing students' knowledge and skills," and "professional and emotional interactions among department members" are significantly above average. In contrast, "promoting group communication with managers, entrepreneurs, and related organizations" and "efforts to maintain an active social presence" are significantly below average and unsatisfactory.
Conclusions and Suggestions: While extra-role behaviors are somewhat addressed in the university's academic departments, they fall short of the ideal. It is recommended that the university implement measures such as educational workshops, group counseling, and support for extra-role activities to improve the situation.
Innovation and Originality: This study offers an innovative and exploratory approach to understanding extra-role behaviors in academic departments. By developing a valid measurement tool and proposing an applicable model, it contributes to enhancing the quality of education and research in universities nationwide
