[English]

Aim: The university system will be effective in society when it feels responsible for social issues. This study has designed a model based on the indicators and dimensions of the university system's social responsibility and has examined its current and desired status in university policies and programs.
Methodology: The research method is exploratory mixed. In the qualitative part, the indicators and components of the model were identified and in the quantitative part, data were collected from 259 faculty members using a stratified random sampling method using a questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis and its reliability by Cronbach's alpha. The data were analyzed in the qualitative part by qualitative content analysis and in the quantitative part by confirmatory factor analysis, paired t-test and Wilcoxon.
Results: The findings identified 50 indicators and 7 components, including moral, environmental, humanitarian, economic, cognitive, legal, educational, and research responsibility. The evaluation revealed a significant gap between the current and desired states.
Conclusions and suggestions: The results indicate an unfavorable situation of the universities studied regarding the role of social responsibility. It is suggested that the dimensions of social responsibility be considered in the policy-making and planning of university systems.
Innovation and originality: The concept of social responsibility of the university system is not much considered in research, policies, and educational programs, and such a study has not been conducted in the target area before. Therefore, research on it as an emerging paradigm is useful for guiding future research
