Designing and building an information literacy scale for psychology students is essential for educational needs assessments

Abstract

Due to the importance of information literacy among university students, this research was conducted with the goal of constructing a valid and reliable scale to assess information literacy in undergraduate psychology students. For this purpose, based on the opinion of educational psychologists who had sufficient experience and knowledge, an initial scale with 35 items was prepared. The statistical population of the study included graduate students of Tehran universities in the field of psychology. From the statistical population, 286 people were selected as participants in the study using cluster random sampling method and responded to the scale. By using SPSS software data was analyzed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, correlation coefficient and independent T test. The results of factor analysis indicated after omitting 11items, five factors were displayed which entitled: 1) methodology, 2) conclusion and explanation, 3) information search, 4) statistical knowledge and 5) research knowledge base. Reliability coefficient for total scale’s score was 0.88 and for five aforementioned factors were 0.83, 0.84, 0.71, 0.82, and 0.59 respectively. Results indicated this measure has psychometric goodness of fit and could be used in other research.
